Home repairs for the elderly recovering from fractures
A lady over 80 years old, accidentally fell and injured herself and had hip surgery. She needs to rest at home after she recovers. We were entrusted by her family to repair her home before she was discharged from the hospital so that she can adapt to her future home life.
However, during the planning process, adjustments were made based on her. After all, it was not yet determined at that time whether she would need to use a wheelchair at home for a long time after being discharged from the hospital and what her daily life would be like.
We suggest that her family consult with her doctor and therapist first so that we can make better arrangements for the entire renovation plan to avoid waste.
Later, we received the therapist’s advice on rehabilitation.
We followed several general principles:
✅ 1. Measure whether the living environment meets the spacious passages of barrier-free design, and ensure that the floor is flat and barrier-free. We have added organizing elements to throw away things that are no longer needed, and try to keep the home floor flat and barrier-free, and the passages are spacious and convenient for wheelchair and walker use.
✅ 2. Try to set up an entrance with a low or no threshold at the entrance and threshold, and ensure that the doorway is wide enough for the elderly to enter and exit.
✅ 3. Install sturdy handrails and supports in corridors, bathrooms, and rooms. Some handrails are even luminous and have anti-slip texture. They should be purchased based on the needs of the elderly.
✅ 4. Choose furniture with rounded corners and anti-collision designs to reduce the risk of hurt.
✅ 5. Good lighting ensures sufficient light, but experience has found that some light levels may be too bright for the elderly, which may lead to their habit of not turning on the lights. Therefore, communicate with them well, listen to the users’ real needs, and respond to their medical needs. It depends on the situation and cannot be generalized.
✅ 6. Create a comfortable environment, use soft and warm colors and easy-to-clean decorative materials to enhance the psychological comfort of the rehabilitation space and enhance psychological comfort. The environment will be more ideal for the rehabilitation of the elderly.
✅ 7. Use sound insulation materials appropriately to reduce external noise and provide a quiet environment. The simplest way is to change the curtains in the bedroom.
✅ 8. If space is available, sufficient activity space can be provided to facilitate the elderly’s daily activities.
✅✅Summary:
A well-designed recovery space can facilitate the elderly recovery process and enhance psychological comfort.
✅✅✅Here is an experience sharing. In fact, there is no need to modify the home of the elderly and patients who are undergoing treatment too early, because after all, it is more efficient to get twice the result with half the effort after consulting the therapist based on the actual recovery situation of the client. It also reduces unnecessary waste.
Home modifications for the elderly with limited mobility (post-stroke)
Uncle Li, who is 80 years old, once suffered a stroke and was hospitalized. After a period of treatment, he recovered and returned home.
✅We were entrusted by Uncle Li's family to organize his home with simple and practical goals.
We first inspected his home and found that the first and biggest problem was a serious lack of lighting.
Whether it was the lights under the kitchen hang cabinets, the ceiling lights or hang cabinet lights throughout the house, the bulbs were broken or the lighting fixtures were too old and burned with completely lost its lighting function.
✅In fact, adequate lighting is very important in the elderly’s home.
✅Handrails were added to the passage to form a rehabilitation corridor, making it convenient and safe for him to enter and exit the room and toilet.
✅The other biggest renovation was the bathtub in the master bathroom. Since it was difficult for Uncle Li to move around and lift his feet, after receiving medical advice, the original bathtub was decided to remove and rebuilt into a new bath shower area.
✅Handrails and non-slip floor tiles were added in the bathroom and shower room. The bathroom also has a new thermo ventilator which can not only keep the room temperature warm, but also adjust the entire bathroom to a suitable dryness, avoiding the risk of the bathroom slipping due to being too humid.
✅Finally, we gave the user some basic information as recorded , such as the dimensions of the entrance, kitchen, toilet, master room and passage, so that there is enough space to enter and exit in case easily apply the walking aid assist in the future when need.
Home for the elderly with visual impairments
Uncle Chen, who is in his 60s, suffers from eye discomfort due to diabetes and his vision is only about 30%. We were entrusted by his family to improve his home to suit his living conditions.
✅When we went to Uncle Chen’s house for the first time, we found that many of the furniture in the living room were not fixed (because they bought loose furniture). However, based on his current living situation, we recommend that the loose furniture be fixed to the wall, by adding support to avoid danger.
✅In addition, in terms of furniture placement, we placed the original TV cabinet in the living room against the wall of the living room to expand the walking space in the living area and prevent the uncle from having clutter or obstacles that affect his daily life.
✅However, there is another very important thing to pay attention to for the visually impaired. In fact, most of them use "memory" to recognize the route. If a home that has been familiar to them for a long time has been reorganized, we actually need to make them familiar with the new positioning. Users can use the effective space with peace of mind. As a designer and organizer, this must be communicated well with family members and parties involved, so that everyone can be mentally prepared and familiar with the new environment, so that they can get twice the result with half the effort.
